Welcome to Studio Castor

We are delighted to welcome you to Studio Castor and wish you a wonderful stay in Zermatt.

At Studio Castor, we believe in genuine hospitality and sustainable tourism that creates long-term value for our guests, the local community, and the exceptional natural environment that surrounds us. Behind Studio Castor are people who are passionate about what they do and deeply connected to Zermatt, its traditions, and the beauty of the Valais Alps.

Our Motto

Arrive, relax, and feel at home.

To help you settle in comfortably, a small selection of essential items is provided upon your arrival. For personal shopping and any special requirements, we kindly ask you to make your own arrangements according to your preferences.

Our wish is that you feel at home from the very first moment and can begin your holiday in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Zermatt: A True Mountain Village

Zermatt lies at an altitude of approximately 1,600 to 1,700 metres above sea level.

In the Alps, weather conditions can change rapidly. Snowfall is possible at any time between September and April. We therefore recommend checking the weather forecast before travelling and bringing clothing and footwear suitable for mountain conditions.

Arriving in sandals may be perfect on a sunny summer day, but a sudden change in weather can quickly transform the landscape and temperatures.

A Natural Paradise, Not an Amusement Park

Zermatt combines spectacular Alpine scenery with modern tourism infrastructure, outstanding gastronomy, and excellent shopping opportunities.

However, it is important to remember:

Zermatt is a natural paradise, not an amusement park.

You will not find escalators on hiking trails, lifts to mountain summits, or artificially created Alpine landscapes. The mountains are authentic, unspoiled, and at times challenging. That is exactly what makes them so special.

We kindly ask you to respect nature and leave no litter behind. Waste disposal bins can be found throughout Zermatt. By helping to keep the mountains clean, you contribute to preserving this unique environment for future generations.

Fresh Mountain Water

Unless otherwise stated, Zermatt’s water comes directly from the surrounding mountains.

Tap water and water from public fountains are of excellent drinking quality. We encourage you to refill your bottle rather than purchasing bottled water whenever possible. This simple choice helps reduce unnecessary plastic waste and supports a more sustainable future.

Sustainability Starts with Small Actions

We appreciate your support in helping us to:

  • use water responsibly;
  • conserve energy;
  • sort and dispose of waste correctly;
  • respect nature and hiking trails;
  • show consideration for local residents and fellow visitors.

Many small actions together can make a big difference.

Our Philosophy

For us, success is not measured by the number of visitors, but by the quality of the experiences they take home.

For more than 150 years, Zermatt has developed through responsible tourism that continues to contribute to the village’s exceptional quality of life. We believe that a memorable stay is created not only by breathtaking scenery but also through respect for local culture, traditions, and nature.

Located in the peaceful and traditional district of Winkelmatten, Studio Castor offers an authentic and relaxing side of Zermatt. Surrounded by beautiful Alpine scenery and only a short distance from hiking trails, mountain railways, restaurants, and the village centre, it is the perfect place to enjoy the mountains and discover the unique lifestyle of the Valais region.

Whether you visit for hiking, skiing, mountaineering, or simply to unwind in the fresh mountain air, Studio Castor provides a comfortable and welcoming home away from home at the foot of the Matterhorn.

We especially appreciate guests who share these values and wish to discover the Alps with awareness, respect, and responsibility.

If you have any questions or need assistance during your stay, we are always happy to help.

A warm welcome to Studio Castor.

We wish you an unforgettable stay in Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn.

Sii - Dessert from the Old Valais

V

Refined version based on traditional Valais recipes

Sii is one of the oldest recorded desserts of Upper Valais. In the Matter Valley and the mountain villages around Zermatt, it was traditionally prepared to make use of precious rye bread. The combination of Valais rye bread, red wine, spices and cream makes this dish a remarkable example of Alpine culinary heritage.

Ingredients for 4 people

250 g Valais Rye Bread AOP
4 tbsp raisins
2 orange slices
6 dl Valais red wine
1 cup water
8 tbsp sugar
3 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
¼ bay leaf
1 pinch nutmeg
20 g butter
2.5 dl crème fraîche or lightly whipped cream
2 to 3 tbsp elderberry or blackcurrant syrup

Preparation

Cut the rye bread into large cubes and lightly toast it in the oven at 160°C until dry and aromatic.

Bring the water, sugar, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf and nutmeg to a boil and allow the mixture to infuse for several minutes.

Add the red wine and heat gently without boiling. Remove the spices.

Pour the warm wine mixture over the rye bread and raisins. Cover and leave to soak for at least one hour, ideally overnight. This allows the characteristic flavours of the traditional Valais recipe to fully develop.

Lightly mash or coarsely blend the soaked mixture. It should remain rustic and not become completely smooth.

Melt the butter in a pan and gently warm the bread mixture while stirring continuously until it reaches a creamy consistency.

Serve the Sii in preheated bowls and flavour with a few drops of elderberry or blackcurrant syrup.

Garnish with very cold crème fraîche or lightly whipped cream and serve immediately.

Historical refinement

For festive occasions, wealthier families sometimes added a small amount of Valais marc or brandy. Extra orange zest, additional cinnamon or a handful of roasted walnuts were also popular refinements. In this way, a simple farmer's dessert became a special delicacy for holidays and family celebrations.

"Sii brings together the soul of old Valais: rye bread from the pantry, wine from the sun-drenched vineyards, and the art of creating something special from simple ingredients."

Emelina's Apricot Cake

A Summer Greeting from Valais

In our family, the apricot cake is still talked about today.

When the apricots ripened in the Rhône Valley and the summer sun shone over Valais, it was always something special. For the children, the aroma of a freshly baked cake felt like a small celebration. For the adults, it was a moment of joy and gratitude.

Back then, people knew that happiness is often found in the simple things: time with family, good conversations around the table and a slice of cake shared together.

To this day, apricot cake reminds us that the most beautiful memories are often created by the simplest moments.

Traditional Valais Apricot Cake

Ingredients

• 1 round shortcrust pastry base
• 700 g ripe Valais apricots
• 2 eggs
• 200 ml whipping cream
• 60 g sugar
• 1 packet vanilla sugar
• a few tablespoons ground almonds

Preparation

  1. Place the shortcrust pastry in a tart tin.
  2. Sprinkle the base with ground almonds.
  3. Halve the apricots and arrange them closely on the pastry.
  4. Mix the eggs, cream, sugar and vanilla sugar well.
  5. Pour the mixture over the apricots.

Enjoy your meal!
